From 14 April 2012 selected graphic art from the international exhibition ”The 100th Anniversary of the Titanic” within the project "STRONG WATER" will be presented in the graphic art gallery "Rigas Tālers" along with chosen artwork created during the creative workshop campaigns.
The exhibition ”The 100th Anniversary of the Titanic” is the second international exhibition within the project ”Strong Water”, organized by The Etching Guild. The first international etching exhibition organized in Riga, 2010 put an emphasis on the intaglio techinque – etching. Nevertheless, this exhibition unites the various techniques of graphic art, and “Strong Water” continues to play the vital role in the project and reveals itself not only as a the vital element of life but also as a sensitive substance that collects memories in the differing molecular formulas. These molecules have the ability to reversably change in dimensions: they cen be the driving force in one’s life, oppositely they can turn into a destructive elements.
Interesting facts about individual participants are joined by the Titanic in this exhibition.Mary Rouncefield, an artist from Great Britain will exhibit a series of graphic artwork devoted to the theme of the Titanic, as this has been her main theme for art overall as she is dierctly linked to the Titnic as her grandmother’s youngest brother and her fiance disappeared in the tragical event.
Inspiration for the exhibition flashed to the curator and artist Nele Zirnite suddenly after reading a poem of Wilhelm Fetler (1883 – 1957), a well-known theologist and poet from Philadelphia, US, born in Latvia. The poem was dedicated to his friend who went aboard the Titanic and never returned. The powerful emotions expressed in the poem motivated Nele during her work at the graphic press, when writing projects and when meditating on the fragile being of human life facing eternity.
The Titanic – a gigantic ship that is known as one of the greatest achievements of the Bell-epoc era. It is a demonstration of the possibilities mankind has created by developing technology. Unfortunately, it did not pass the test nature and fate had put forth, capitulating at the feet of its destiny it took many lives with it. It is known that modern technologies had been used when building this ship. It was built to be unsinkable, as stated by a White Star Line worker on the day of presentation on 31 May, 1911: ” Even God himself couldn’t sink this ship.” Similar story fragments and legends are told up to this day, presented in various forms and shapes in art media. We, humans, favour legends, however water is the only matter that truly remembers and posesses the real story. “The Atlantic depth. The ways of God are often undetermined, but – if He has allowed this to happen, we must lean our heads humbly to the remains and kiss the whip that is teaching us a lesson.” (W. Fetler)
The ancient etching/graphic press of Krauze, made almost half a century before the creation of the Titanic in the 1960s, has been ‘docked’ at the shore of Daugava in Old Riga in the House of Art like an unsinkable ship that ‘breaks the waves of creative art processes’. This ship serves as the continuance of the graphic art traditions and further development throughout the years. Moreover, what is surprising is the fact that the heavy mechanical details for the press had been molded at the same Karl Krups manufactory where the details of the Titanic had been produced; this is confirmed by the same letter combinations on the press. Other facts reveal that the carpets that formed the interior of the Titanic have been produced in Riga.
These, seemingly insignificant facts add a special value to the exhibition overall. They reflect not only the brief linkage between Riga and the the Titanic, but also the role of Riga as an important port city during the notable events of that time. Therefore, this exhibition in Riga In Remembrance of the Titanic – Event of the Century is a creative incentive of the synergy connecting worldwide culture with the culture of Latvia throughout history to nowadays.
On Saturdays from 21 April The Etching Guild is organizing creative workshops on the third floor.
Visitors will have the unique possibility to get acknowledged with the etching technique and make their print dedicated to the Titanic.
